The ‘glorious sound’ of 100 voices

- Joanne Holden

When 91-year-old Berry Mitchell sang in a mass choir for the first time three years ago in Ashburton, he decided he just had to bring the ‘‘wonderful experience’’ to Timaru.

The Midland Masonic Male Choir, which Mitchell established 33 years ago, will be banding together with the InHarmony Choir, Timaru District Choir, and Rhyth-Mix Singers for 100 Voices, an inaugural mass choir concert at St Mary’s Anglican Church on September 1.

‘‘It’s a glorious sound, with the ladies’ voices soaring and the male voices giving it the depth,’’ Mitchell said.

Together, the choirs will sing four numbers – the Hallelujah chorus from 18th century composer George Frideric Handel’s Messiah serving as the finale.

‘‘Also the four choirs are each singing three numbers of their own choice, so we’ve got a variety. It’ll be most interesting and enjoyable.’’

‘‘I would like to think it will become an annual event.’’

Taking part in a 150-strong mass choir during the Festival of New Zealand Male Choirs in June 2016, was what inspired Mitchell to pitch the concert idea to the four Timaru choirs a few weeks ago.

‘‘It was a wonderful experience,’’ he said.

‘‘I love singing in a choir, and just the pleasure of being with likeminded people and the beautiful sound of music.’’

Mitchell, who usually sings baritone but will be switching to bass for the concert, was ‘‘surprised’’ at how receptive people were to his idea.

‘‘I’m delighted that the choirs in Timaru have co-operated in this and they’re working together,’’ he said.

‘‘I’m most grateful to the conductors of the choirs, who are putting the effort in and encouraging the choir members.’’

■ The concert starts at 2pm. Entry is $10, with proceeds benefiting the Canterbury and West Coast branch of Westpac Rescue Helicopter.
