Timaru rowers impressive in winning six Canterbury titles

-

Timaru Rowing Club crews warmed up for the South Island club championships by winning six A finals at the Canterbury champs on Lake Ruataniwha recently.

The crews, dominated by rowers from Timaru Boys’ High School, Timaru Girls’ High and Craighead Diocesan, also bagged a further six silver and nine bronze medals in the A finals events.

Head rowing coach at TBHS, Brian Smith, was impressed with how his squad members were able to perform after a week-long camp leading into the regatta.

‘‘The boys left everything they had out there, and that shows in our results.

‘‘Rowing is tough at the regional and national levels, and the squad needs to focus on their fitness from here on into our Maadi Cup campaign.

‘‘At this year’s camp we decided to bring in some expert sweeping coaching, some targeted land-based training and look at training smarter, not necessarily harder.

‘‘The squad should be proud of all their results; they got out what they put in.’’

The South Island club championships will also be held at Lake Ruataniwha today and tomorrow.
