Warriors lose another prop

-

The Warriors’ depleted front-row stocks have taken another hit after up-and-coming prop Jackson Frei was ruled out for the NRL season. Frei was forced from the field with an injury to his right knee during the opening quarter of last week’s 18-16 trial loss to Melbourne, with scans confirming the worst-case scenario of a ruptured anterior cruciate ligament. ‘‘He had a bad twist and straight after the game the doctors and physio . . . anticipated that it wasn’t going to be good news,’’ Warriors coach Stephen Kearney said. Frei, 22, is the second prop to suffer an ACL injury in as many weeks after Bunty Afoa went down at training, while Sam Lisone was released last weekend to join the Gold Coast Titans, despite having a season to run on his contract.

Serge Gnabry and Robert Lewandowski combined to lead a devastating second-half attacking display by Bayern Munich at Chelsea yesterday and secure a 3-0 victory in their Champions League last-16 first leg. The hosts were torn apart by the intensity of the German champions but held out until the 51st minute when Gnabry netted the opener after playing a one-two with Lewandowski. Gnabry started the move that led to the second inside three minutes, releasing Lewandowski on the left flank again and racing forward to receive the ball back in the penalty area and slotting into the net. Alphonso Davies spearheaded the counterattack to create the third, making a lightning run down the left flank and crossing to Lewandowski for a tap-in in the 76th minute. The night’s other last-16 match was a closer contest with Barcelona drawing 1-1 at Napoli after Antoine Griezmann cancelled out Dries Mertens’ opener for the Italians.
