NPD bringing two new fuel outlets to Timaru

- Samesh Mohanlall

‘‘We’ve received a fantastic welcome from the Timaru community since we opened our first site . . . in 2013.’’ Barry Sheridan

Timaru should have two new selfserve fuel stations on State Highway 1 at its northern and southern entrances open before Christmas.

NPD chief executive Barry Sheridan said work at the two new sites at Redruth and Washdyke was due to start in August..

Construction at the South Island family-owned fuel retailer’s new Timaru sites had been delayed because of Covid-19 lockdowns and delays in the design and consent process, Sheridan said.

He said the new sites would help the Timaru economy by providing lower fuel prices as well as employing local contractors to assist with site development.

‘‘We [also] use local contractors for various site support activities including regular pump checks, maintenance and cleaning.’’

Rooney Earthmoving, which owns the Washdyke site on State Highway 1, has demolished old buildings to make way for construction.

‘‘We’re pleased that work will be able to get underway soon. We’ve received a fantastic welcome from the Timaru community since we opened our first site at Evans St in 2013,’’ Sheridan said.

The Redruth site, at 161 King St, will have 12 pumps – eight for light vehicles and four for heavy vehicles, while Washdyke, opposite Phar Lap Raceway, will have eight for light vehicles and eight for heavy vehicles.

Both sites will also offer 100Plus, one of the highest octane, road legal petrol grades to be offered in New Zealand by an established fuel retail network, he said.

The additions will bring NPD’s Timaru sites to three, adding to the one on Evans St, which will remain open.
