NZ of­fer­ing sup­port to search for live­stock ship

The Min­istry of For­eign Af­fairs and Trade says New Zealand is of­fer­ing sup­port in the search for the miss­ing ship Gulf Live­stock 1. The com­ments come fol­low­ing re­ports China, South Korea and Tai­wan have agreed to help in the search for the ship. It went miss­ing in Ja­panese wa­ters at the height of Typhoon Maysak in early Septem­ber. It was car­ry­ing 5800 cows and 43 crew, in­clud­ing New Zealan­ders Lochie Bellerby and Scott Har­ris. The ship sent a dis­tress sig­nal about 1.40am on Septem­ber 2, Ja­pan time, be­fore sink­ing. Search op­er­a­tions have been headed by the Ja­pan Coast Guard. Three crew were plucked from the wa­ter in pre­vi­ous search ef­forts, with one later dy­ing. An MFAT spokesman said of­fi­cials were of­fer­ing in­for­ma­tion and sup­port. ‘‘We re­main in close con­tact with Ja­pan Coast Guard.’’
