Cham­pion in hor­ror crash

De­fend­ing cham­pion Chloe´ Dygert suf­fered a grue­some in­jury fol­low­ing a spec­tac­u­lar crash at the world road cy­cling cham­pi­onships in Bologna. Dygert was taken away on a stretcher with a drip at­tached af­ter suf­fer­ing a deep gash above her left knee among other in­juries af­ter she crashed into a road­side bar­rier and hur­tled over it. She was taken to hospi­tal and USA Cy­cling said she had been con­scious and talk­ing. Dygert had a lead of nearly 30 sec­onds in the time trial when she ap­peared to lose con­trol on a small de­scent. New Zealand’s Ge­or­gia Wil­liams fin­ished 12th while team-mate Mikayla Har­vey was 20th. Rio 2016 Olympic road cham­pion Anna van der Breggen won the race.
