Reality of motherhood in play

Being a mother is exhausting, as a character in the South Canterbury Drama League’s delayed show soon discovers.

The league cast Motherhood the Musical, by Sue Fabisch, in March to be staged mid-year but Covid-19 forced its postponement until November.

The show opens tonight and director Alice Sollis said it was great to be able to go ahead with the show in alert level 1 and that ticket sales were going well.

She said she had never had children, by choice, and found it hard to believe that it was so busy being a mother, but she was assured by parents on the crew it was all true.

‘‘I thought ‘you’ve got to be kidding’,’’ Sollis said.

When one of the actors, who is a parent, turned up for rehearsals wearing odd socks, it confirmed for her what she had been told.

The production’s four actors – Emma Hall as Amy, Hayley Goodman as Tasha, Megan Holden as Barb and Suellen Robb as Brooke, sing 20 ‘‘beautiful’’ numbers’’, Sollis said

The show starts with a pregnant Amy being thrown a surprise baby shower as she waxes lyrical about how she will be able to get scrapbooking done once the birth is over, but she is soon brought down to earth by her friends’ experiences.

Sollis said one crew member suggested every teenager should have to watch the show as a natural contraceptive.

‘‘It has its funny moments and its serious side,’’ Sollis said.

Motherhood the Musical is on at the Playhouse Theatre from November 26-29 and December 2-5. Tickets are available through iTicket.
