Too little, too late for Man U

Paris Saint-Germain.

PSG defender Presnel Kimpembe, who was on the field at the time, also posted that message on his Twitter account.

Mbappe expressed his support for Webo on Twitter. ‘‘Say no to racism,’’ he wrote. ‘‘Webo we are with you.’’

Former Manchester United defender Rio Ferdinand, who played 81 times for England, said it was crucial Uefa responds strongly.

‘‘We’re at a disturbing tipping point, not a week goes by without an incident involving race,’’ he told broadcaster BT Sport. ‘‘The players walking off is a step in the right direction, but it can’t just be left to them.’’

RB Leipzig survived a late fightback from Manchester United to clinch a 3-2 win that sent the German side through to the Champions League knockout stage and eliminated the English Premier League giants.

Leipzig dominated the early stages yesterday and were 2-0 up inside the first 13 minutes, thanks to goals from Angelino and Amadou Haidara.

A third goal in the 69th minute from Justin Kluivert – son of Dutch legend Patrick – appeared to condemn United to the Europa League.

But a Bruno Fernandez penalty in the 80th minute and a Paul Pogba header two minutes later gave the visitors hope of a remarkable comeback, with Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side only needing a point to progress.

However, Leipzig held on to book their spot in the last 16 and dump United out of Europe’s premier club competition.

United had been firm favourites to progress from group H after beating PSG and Leipzig in their opening two matches, but two successive defeats brought their Champions League campaign to an end.

In London, a second-string Chelsea side was held 1-1 at home by Krasnodar, in a match where there was little at stake.

Jorginho converted a penalty four minutes after Remy Cabella had put Krasnodar in front. Chelsea had already qualified for the knockout stage as group E winners, while Axel Witsel scored on his return to Russia to ensure Borussia Dortmund topped their group with a 2-1 win over Zenit St Petersburg.

Cristiano Ronaldo got the better of Lionel Messi by scoring two penalties to lead Juventus to a 3-0 win at Barcelona, dealing the Spanish team their first home defeat in the competition in seven years.

The final group matches will be played today.
