Webster’s painful price for battle with avocado
Corey Webster has managed to see the funny side of his accident in the kitchen that has ruled the shooting guard out of the Breakers’ start to the ANBL season.
Webster required surgery after slicing a nerve in his left non-shooting hand with a knife while attempting to cut an avocado.
After struggling to remove the pit with his usual method, Webster said he tried to improvise, which is where things went wrong.
‘‘It wasn’t working so I decided to just stab it in and it just went all the way through,’’ he said.
‘‘I’m no Gordon Ramsay, obviously.
‘‘I’ve severed the nerve that leads down this ring finger, so I’ve got no feeling on the inside. I’ve got feeling on this side [the outside of the finger], though, and it’s getting tingly up here [fingertip] so I’m taking that as a good sign and the nerves are starting to grow back.’’
It’s a frustrating setback for Webster, who faces another three weeks on the sideline and is expected to miss the Breakers’ first two games of the season, which begins on January 15. However, that could yet change as Australia battles multiple outbreaks of Covid-19.
But the 32-year-old couldn’t help but laugh after hotel staff left a reminder of his unfortunate mishap as he returned from hospital.

room but they left the avocado on the bench with the knife in it and all the blood still on the avocado.
‘‘I’m not sure why? Maybe just for me to reminisce on that. It was pretty funny, though.’’
Meanwhile, star import Lamar Patterson has met his new teammates for the first time after leaving quarantine. Patterson, who has replaced last season’s standout import Scotty Hopson, has joined the squad in Hobart and after several years playing against each other, Webster is looking forward to sharing the court with the former Brisbane Bullets swingman.
‘‘I’ve played against Lamar for a few years now,’’ Webster added. ‘‘I first played against him in China, probably three or four years ago. And then obviously when he joined the NBL I had good battles against him.
[He’s a] superstar player in this league. So, happy to have him here and go to battle with him this season.’’
