Lord Of The Rings: The Two Towers

TVNZ Duke, 7pm

Starring Elijah Wood, Viggo Mortensen. This second instalment in the Tolkien trilogy is more suitably darker in feel than the other two films, with captivating special effects and a great cast. Best of all, it sets the scene for the climactic finale. ★★★★

The Mountain Between Us Sky Premiere, 8.30pm Starring Idris Elba, Kate Winslet. The star power is wasted in this melodrama masquerading as an adventure story. While there are some nice moments, with some unbelievable cinematography, there’s just not enough substance in the frankly silly script to carry the day. ★★

Batman V Superman: Dawn Of Justice

TVNZ 2, 8.30pm

Starring Ben Affleck, Henry Cavill. DC pits its two main superheroes against each other in this oddly watchable mishmash. It revolves around a fiendish plot by Lex Luthor, who pours kryptonite-fuelled fire on Batman and Superman’s feud. The plot is seriously flawed, but the spectacular effects will please fans. ★★★ X-Men: Apocalypse Three, 8.30pm Starring James McAvoy, Michael Fassbender. Bryan Singer has been responsible for some of the best superhero movies the genre has had to offer with X2 and Days Of Future Past, but he takes his eye off the ball here. It’s not that it’s all that bad, it is just that it’s all been done before. ★★

Breakfast At Tiffany’s M ori TV, 8.30pm Starring Audrey Hepburn, George Peppard Classic romance comedy/drama based on the edgier Truman Capote novel. It stars Audrey Hepburn in full swing as the country girl-turned-socialite who falls for a struggling writer-cum-gigolo in her apartment block. ★★★★

Haywire Choice, 8.30pm Starring Michael Fassbender, Ewan McGregor. Virtually unknown actress (but champion mixed martial artist) Gina Carano plays opposite a stellar line-up of leading men in this formulaic but well-paced action thriller about a betrayed government agent on the hunt for revenge. ★★★

The Blue Lagoon Bravo, 8.30pm Starring Brooke Shields, Christopher Atkins. Enduring if pretty awful
