Mary Berry shares her love of food.
What is the dish that your family are always asking you to cook?
They love a roast leg of lamb on a Sunday. It has always been part of our family life – Sunday lunch with a roast and the classic trimmings, chatting and catching up on everyone’s stories.
What has been your most memorable dinner party?
Any of our family occasions – my 80th birthday was very special to me.
As such a celebrated cook, do you do most of the cooking at home or does (husband) Paul step in to help?
I always cook for my family and friends but our daughter Annabel is a great cook too and Tom, my son, and his wife Sarah are keen cooks.
What would be your favourite English pudding?
English trifle is a classic and one of my favourites too.
What would you consider to be your signature dish?
In the UK I am pretty well known for my Lemon Drizzle Cake. What are your key tips for foolproof cooking?
Follow a good recipe that you know your family will enjoy. Read and follow the recipe carefully and give yourself time, so you are not in a rush.
You have been working with food since the 1960s. How do you continue to come up with fresh inspiration for your recipes?
No problem as there are always new ingredients, recently new grains, different vegetables. I am a home cook, so always use ingredients that can be easily bought in supermarkets or farm shops.
Which ingredients do you always have in your pantry, and why?
As basic ingredients I have eggs, butter, self-raising flour, sugar, rice, pasta, fresh herbs, cheese, onion, garlic and dry cured ham.
