Battling an addiction to The Block

- T. Carroll (Ohawe)

The Block NZ (Three, Sunday to Wednesday) is a big improvement on last year – congratulations. But are the contestants as bad as they look or is it heavily edited? The boys may have qualifications but I have yet to see them get past second gear and look as though they know how to do practical work. The girls, well, I’ve never seen so much hugging ... Do they get their matching outfits from the wardrobe department or are they advertising a new line? Agni and Claire are the only ones who show any sign of imagination but ‘lazy’ takes on a whole new meaning. And Claire has put equality for women back 10 spaces. Finally, Amy and Stu. I liked them to start with, but they got too arrogant. Now it is hard to find anything to like about anyone. But I still have to watch it. I’m addicted. I need to finish this. The Block is on in half an hour.

I love The Block NZ on Three. It is entertaining, humorous and inspiring. Night after night, Mark Richardson is witty with his puns and ‘bad dad’ jokes, and the challenges are a bit of a laugh. The show also provides tips and hints of current trends for home owners and proud tenants alike and offering some reasonably priced ideas to transform our homes is brilliant. Although I don’t often agree with the judges, their feedback and critique also gives value and an added dimension to the programme. The teams are all unique and provide great entertainment. However, this year I feel as though, with the exception of Stu and Amy, that the teams don’t seem to appreciate how lucky they are to have been chosen to be on the show. Chlo and Em seem to be lapping it up being on camera, and doing little in the way of work. The boys also appear to be work-shy, doing their utmost to cut corners and avoid the advice of The Wolf and the judges. These teams need to get serious and put in some effort. Agni and Claire are taking it more seriously, but Agni seems to need a bit of an energy boost, whereas The Oldies are running rings around all the young ones. Go Stu and Amy. You are the only team that deserve to win.
