Accused of neglecting blind people

- Mark Machon (Tuakau)

I’m writing on behalf of my adopted mother who is legally blind. The issue we have is that more and more television programmes end with the conclusion in writing scrolled up the screen. For example, on The Accused (TVNZ 1, Tuesday, August 28) we missed the verdict. Fact, there are 60,000 legally registered partially-to-totally blind people who may “listen” to television. Additionally, in programmes with discussion panels it is difficult to hear when they are shouting over each other. And, lastly, the background music is so loud it drowns out the voices of the people talking. Obviously, no one expects all TV channels to take into consideration the visually impaired. However, a little thought would go a long way to improving listening time on television.
