Shorty Street language lacks respect

-

I applaud the letters of Rev Lyn Harre and Harvey Rosieur (Mr Telly, September 20) for standing up against blasphemy on Shorty Street. This language is so lacking in respect towards Christianity and it is astonishing they can get away with it given everyone is so politically correct in today’s climate to being sensitive to the rights of all groups in society. Christians should be afforded the same respect.

Marion Bermpost (Auckland)

I find Mr Telly so entertaining and the complaints about Shortland Street’s use of ‘Jesus Christ’ as curse words are no exception. I would think that if God had a problem with it or anything else the show does, he would have either stopped the writers and actors from doing it in the first place, or told them off himself, being all-powerful and everything. Maybe the fact that they and millions of other people can “get away with it” (and have been doing so frequently since those words were invented) means that God has more important things to spend his time on than how people choose to use his name. Meanwhile, please keep up those letters – reading them is (almost) more fun than Shorty.

K. Barker (Wellington)

I have watched Shortland Street since it began. I cannot believe what I am watching now. It is just a very poor comedy show. The actors are a joke. Sebastian, Leanne, Damo, Dawn and Dylan a killer that never seems to be caught. I shall not watch this rubbish in future.

Patricia Stubbings (Tauranga)

I write in support of both Rev Lyn Harre and Harvey Rosieur regarding Shortland Street. The blasphemy that has been creeping in is unnecessary and adds nothing to the story. It is one of the reasons that I stopped watching some time back. If another religion was treated with similar disregard and disrespect, there would be a huge outcry. If the current language, characters and storylines are entertaining to the majority then heaven help us.
