HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO... JOHNNY DEPP (57)

John Christopher Depp II was born in Owensboro, Kentucky.

His father, a civil engineer, was also called John Christopher Depp.

Johnny’s parents divorced when he was 15. He then dropped out of school to become a rock musician, playing guitar.

He had modest success with a band called The Kids, and went to Los Angeles with them.

In LA, he met actor Nicolas Cage who advised him to pursue acting instead of music.

Depp’s first significant film role was in 1984 in A Nightmare On Elm Street.

He became a teen idol starring in the 80s TV series 21 Jump Street as an undercover police officer.

After his TV work, Depp decided to focus solely on movies and in 1990 he starred in Edward Scissorhands (above), teaming up with director Tim Burton, for the first of many films together including Ed Wood, Sleepy Hollow and Charlie And The Chocolate Factory.

Depp says Burton is “a brother, a friend and a brave soul”.

In 2003, Depp starred as Captain Jack Sparrow in The Pirates Of The Caribbean, saying that Sparrow “is definitely a big part of me”.

Although nominated three times for an Academy Award as Best Actor (Pirates Of The Caribbean, Sweeney Todd and Finding Neverland) he has yet to win.

Depp has been married twice – to Lori Allison (1983-85) and Amber Heard (2015-17) but has had many long-term relationships including with Winona Ryder, Kate Moss and Vanessa Paradis.
