Knocked Up Bravo, 7.30pm Starring Seth Rogen, Katherine Heigl. An entertainment reporter falls pregnant to a careless slacker after a one-night stand in this hilarious and extremely well-scripted comedy, written, produced and directed by Judd Apatow, who also wrote The 40-Year-Old Virgin. While often raunchy, it is also surprisingly poignant at times. ★★★★

The Grudge Sky Premiere, 8.30pm Starring Andrea Riseborough, Lin Shaye. This remake of a Japanese horror/thriller is genuinely creepy, and while it stars American actors, the fact that it is set in Japan adds an additionally unnerving fish-out-of-water element to what was an already chilling premise. It is all about a curse which results from a death so violent, that it lurks around as an invisible force, enveloping everyone who enters the premises where the death took place. There is no doubt the cultural implications inherent in this film add to its impact, but the key to making the hairs on the back of the neck stand up, however, comes from director Takashi Shimizu’s ability to create a chilling and unsettling mood. ★★★★

Meatballs

TVNZ Duke, 8.30pm

Starring Bill Murray, Chris Makepeace. Classic American summer camp movie from 1979 notable for Murray’s first movie role, as an immature camp counsellor. Great fun and not as crude or gross as others of its kind. ★★★★

Robot And Frank M ori TV, 8.30pm Starring Frank Langella. This multi-layered comedy drama in which a retired cat burglar is gifted with a robot butler programmed to look after him rests easily on the capable shoulders of star Frank Langella. ★★★★

The Man

TVNZ 2, 8.35pm

Starring Samuel L. Jackson, Eugene Levy. Samuel L. Jackson plays a cop trying to track down a killer only to find himself teamed up with dental technician Eugene Levy in this action comedy that brings to mind the Mel Gibson/Joe Pesci flavour of Lethal Weapon 4 – but is only half as funny. ★★
