His first taste of acting came when he appeared in That ‘70s Show playing his father, Rocky Johnson.

Dwayne Johnson made his wrestling debut in 1996 for WWE – his stage name was originally Rocky Maivia and he was not loved by fans. In fact, the crowds booed him and chanted “Rocky sucks”. It was this poor reception that drove him to create his alter-ego ‘The Rock’, known for his raised eyebrow and brash charm.

Wrestling is the Johnson family business, with Johnson’s father and grandfather both being pro-wrestlers. His father was Rocky Johnson, the first black Georgia Heavyweight Champion and his grandfather was Peter Maivia, who trained in New Zealand. In 2008, Johnson inducted his father and grandfather into the WWE Hall of Fame.

Johnson’s grandmother was also famous in wrestling circles – Lia Maivia was one of the first female wrestling promoters. Dwayne is also related to the notable WWE wrestlers The Wild Samoans.
