Upper Hutt Leader

Councillor Amour calls it a day

- COLIN WILLIAMS

Mary Amour, a councillor since 2007, has decided to not stand again.

‘‘I just feel nine years is enough and that the time is right.’’

The time it can take to get things done on the council does not sit well with her. ’’I’m the type of person who if I say i’m going to do something I just do it,’’ the former owner of Archibalds The Art Place said.

‘‘I understand why things do take time but at least now I feel there are good things happening for Upper Hutt.’’

She supports the city’s financial incentives for businesses.

‘‘It’s vital the CBD is up and running and there has been some real improvement and our ability to help, to give them a kick-start, is invaluable,’’ she said.

Amour is also encouraged at plans to revitalise the former CIT, now owned by Malcolm Gillies and Kevin Melville.

‘‘I think it has got so much potential, its fantastic and I believe its future is in good hands.’’’

Amour nominates citizen ceremonies as an unsung area of council affairs she will miss.

‘‘It’s a huge thing all these people coming to Upper Hutt,’’ she said.

‘‘And I always enjoyed the public’s input on our annual and long-term plans, their coming in to speak directly to us about the things they are passionate about,’’ Amour said.
