‘‘We would have about 80 active juniors this season. Hockey is a quick game and I think it’s the fourth most popular game in the world in playing numbers.’’

Rennie has no retirement plans. ‘‘ But I might not play quite as much next year, I’ve got bad legs,’’ she said.

She is also a veteran cricket player, having played for the same Upper Hutt women’s club side or 21 years’’.

‘‘I guess I’m a bit of a stayer when it comes to sport. It’s my favourite thing.’’
