Gun club hosts sharp shooters

- ABBY BROWN

Aaron Phillips represented his club well when it hosted the National Compak Championship from November 19 to 20.

The Hutt Valley Clay Target Club member came second in the adult C grade.

‘‘Aaron did exceptionally well, given the compak is not his usual discipline,’’ president Dave Turner said.

Compak is a form of clay target shooting where the shooters move around four stations with the targets flying across in front of the shooters at different angles.

They are kept within a 45 degree and 20 degree box on the horizon.

Club vice president Mike Dasler said Aaron normally shot straight down the line at targets on a static track.

Compak was a lot harder as there were six different traps firing targets in all different directions.

Another local, Grant Clark, was third in the C grade.

Dasler estimated 98 shooters participated in a four-day competition.

A trophy shoot and the North Island champs were held on Thursday and Friday respectively.

‘‘The Australians beat us in the team shoot.’’

He said that ‘‘was a bit unfortunate as individually the Kiwis were doing better than them’’.

High Gun, the highest score overall, was won by James Simpson of Nelson.

He was presented with a Beretta gun by Chris Zeisler GM of Beretta NZ

Upper Hutt Mayor Wayne Guppy was on hand to congratulate all the winners with medals and sashes.
