Seeds puts his talent on record

- COLIN WILLIAMS

Stand out young athlete Finn Seeds is continuing his record-breaking form on the track.

The Year 10 Hutt International Boys School student was the star performer at the Hutt Zone College Athletics at Newtown Park on March 10.

Competing in the junior events, Seeds, 13, smashed personal records - both his own and others - in winning his specialist 800-metres and 1500-metres events.

He spearheaded HIBS’s team success as they headed eight other schools.to defend the Campbell Shield,

HIBS finished well clear of any opposition with their 170 points a massive 51 ahead of Hutt Valley High School.

Seeds’ 800-metres win in 2m:02:40, meant he took six seconds off the 37-year-old junior record [held by Upper Hutt College’s D Jarvis].

His 1500-metres time, run in perfect conditions on the Newtown track, was equally impressive.

The Silverstream resident’s 4:18:97 effort took almost 10 seconds off the 4:28:52 record he had himself set a year earlier.

Layton Tapa was another HIBS runner to break a record. He ran 38.43 seconds in winning the junior 300m.

Jack Laird was also a strong performer, winning the senior 400m and the long jump.

Upper Hutt College’s Sautia Misa also had an outstanding meeting, in the field and on the track.

His stand-out performance came in the boys’ junior high jump where he created a new record by reaching a height of 1.77m.

Misa, a Year 10 student, also showed his all-round skill in taking out the 200-metres title and running second in the 100-metres.

Minnie Simpson, from Heretaunga College, also finished a new record holder. The 13-year-old won the junior javelin with a throw of 24.99 metres.

UHC’s Amania Mafi took out two titles in the intermediate girls competition. She won the discus and her specialist shot put, with a 12.91m effort.

Seeds, who represents Upper Hutt Athletics at club level, is coached by Darryl Robinson of Trentham United Harriers and Don Dalgleish of Wellington Scottish.

His latest achievements follow the recent North Island Colgate Games where he won the 13-year-old boys 800 and 1500-metre events.

Finn also won the 800,1500 and 3000-metres under-16 titles at the Athletics Wellington Championships as a 13-year old.

The HIBS’s talent now has his sights set on the titles and records at the two-day Athletics Wellington Junior Championships on March 19 and 26 and the mid-week College Sport Wellington Regionals on March 23.
