Mask-making, music and exhibitions

- ELEANOR WENMAN

The school holidays are here and Expressions Whirinaki has a whole host of activities for kids to enjoy.

Minkisi, an exhibition of masks and statues from West and Central Africa wraps up on April 23 and to say goodbye the gallery is hosting a Magical Mask Making session.

From 1pm on April 23 this event is suitable for all ages and is free. Pop along, let your imagination run wild and create a masterpiece.

For a theatrical display, mark April 29 in your diaries. Songs of the Seas is a show for children that explores stories of the seas. Fluorescent fish and starry skies feature in the performance and it is suitable for children aged two and above.

All tickets are $8. Those under two sitting on a parent’s or caregiver’s lap get in free. The first showing is at 10am and, due to popular demand, a second show has been added, starting at 11.30am.

The sea theme continues with My Name is Moana, a tribute to the ocean led by art laureate Moana Maniapoto. Maniapoto is joined by her sister, Trina, Pitch Black’s Paddy Free and Karlos Tunks Saunders.

My Name is Moana takes place on April 26 at 8pm. Tickets are $20 for adults or $18 for Friends of Expressions.

Older childrens and teenagers not so keen on masks or sea songs may appreciate the pastel artwork collection Rural. The pieces show scenes from New Zealand rural life and were created by a group of pastel artists from the Kapiti Coast. The exhibition runs until April 25.

The Healing Pools exhibition continues too. The interactive room lets you wander through light, creating patterns on the floor which move and develop in different ways. Healing Pools closes April 30.

While you’re checking out Expressions, drop by the Upper Hutt i-SITE and grab their School Holiday Voucher Book. The books are free and are filled with offers from businesses such as Monterey Cinemas, H2O Xtream and Staglands.
