Upper Hutt Leader

Local side’s winning ways

- COLIN WILLIAMS

Upper Hutt’s top sporting sides were in strong winning form on Saturday.

The Rams’ top two sides had runaway wins over their Paremata-Plimmerton opposition in the at Maidstone Park sun.

The premiers handed out a 52-8 shellacking in a game which, at halftime, they were leading by six points only.

Hayden Schrijvers scored early after good work down the flank by his brother, Daniel and the big fullback Tafa Tafa while a typical Mitchell Markov long distance finish was only other reward in a demanding first 40.

It all came good after that though with another six tries, including debut efforts from Jayden Treviranus, who grabbed two, and his midfield replacement Konelio Feaunati who scored in style right on fulltime.

The win, ahead of home games against Avalon (Anzac Day) and Johnsonville (Saturday) brought five welcome competition points as the tussle for the Swindale Shield top eight tightens.

Earlier the Rams reserves hit up an even more impressive 61-0 score to earn their fourth win and move to just outside the top four in the Harper Lock Shield.

A few hundred metres away, on Upper Hutt City’s glistening astro surface, there were more good if less emphatic football results.

In the W-League, the Upper Hutt City women made the most of a 1am kick-off through notching two early goals against their Seatoun opposition. Things were tighter after that - a goal apiece in more than 60 minutes of football - but the result and the side’s unbeaten run was always guaranteed. City’s goals went to Emma Main, CJ Bott and Bria Sargent.

The men than were strong in claiming their second win in a row when beating Ngatiawa North Wellington 2-0 to move to mid-position on the Capital Premier table.
