What’s your old favourite sweet treat?

-

Last week, one of the leading stories on our Stuff website was the Whittaker’s chocolate company revival of the toffee milk chocolate bar. Whittaker’s Toffee Milks were first created in the 1930s.

This revival had us asking what sweet treats people would like to see returned next and what prized New Zealand lollies may have their production shifted overseas. This week, we took to Neighbourly to ask what discontinued treat you’d love to make a comeback.

Responses were mixed as people searched through their childhood memories for their favourites. Snifters made an appearance, as did a ice blocks and ice creams. The Pascall brand, owned by Cadbury, stopped producing Kiwi favourites Snifters, Sparkles and Tangy Fruit in 2008 as the company said there was a lack of consumer demand.

SANDRA ALEXANDER, TIMBERLEA

Black Jelly Babies and Jelly Beans with the real licorice / aniseed taste.

After scrolling through some of the answers, Sandra Alexander added another favourite of hers:

All this is making my mouth water and whilst it has nothing to do with Whittaker’s - it is a desire for a chocolate dipped, rolled, ice cream cone. Faced with a choice of favourite flavours I wouldn’t know where to start. Definitely NOT an over-priced option from certain franchise.

LEANNE TURIPA, TOTARA PARK

As a kid I really enjoyed those lollies I think were called decks? They were in a white wrapper with spades, diamonds, hearts and clubs on it and the lollie I think was a red raspberry and they were soft and chewy. Would just love to eat one to bring back those great childhood memories again.

JACQUI MATEARA, PINEHAVEN

Jacqui Mateara was in favour of fruit bon bons and Snifters.

LOUISE DUNCAN, SILVERSTREAM

Going back further in the mists of time were Carnival Patties, Jolly Lolly ice blocks, Milkshake Ice Blocks, Spearmint Chews, Peppy Bars and biscuits that they brought out for awhile called Banana Royales yum! But to be truthful here Jet Planes and Wine gums now definitely don’t taste anywhere near as nice as they did way back then.

SUE HAZLEWOOD, TRENTHAM

Sue Hazlewood said she was showing her age as she listed Sabrina Bars as her treat of choice. She described the bars as ‘‘bumpy toffee covered in chocolate. MMMMM.’’

PENNY JONES, PINEHAVEN

Penny Jones was keen to ‘‘bring back Tangy Fruits!’’

GARETH CLARKE, TRENTHAM

Gareth Clarke took a different view on the treats question.

‘‘You’ve been able to buy Whittaker’s Toffee Milk Bars for ages (90 years? recently in boxes of 72 bars), they’ve just released it in different sizes, this is less newsworthy than that time Malibu Stacy got a new hat.’’
