Pair breaks records with Angry Azz

- ELEANOR WENMAN

Breaking records is what Upper Hutt couple Pauline Lane and Arran Brattle do best.

The pair have spent their time recently racing their modified dragster ‘‘Angry Azz’’ in eight meetings around the country and have broken both national records.

Lane said they were proud of the achievements they had gained so far.

‘‘We have only been in the sport for three seasons and believe we have done very well. Neither myself nor Arran had driven or drag raced before and to come away with such achievements already is very rewarding,’’ she said.

Angry Azz is raced by both Brattle and Lane. Together the pair broke the New Zealand Drag Racing Association (NZDRA) modified dragster national record as Brattle made it across the line in 7.84 seconds. The previous record was 7.94.

The Angry Azz team also smashed the national record in the same category under the International Hot Rod Association with a time of 7.79 seconds, down from 7.94.

While the pair have raced faster, the records had to be broken at national events to be counted.

Lane was also ranked as the second fastest female in New Zealand by the NZV8 magazine, with her personal best time of 7.86 at 168 miles per hour.

She said she was humbled by the ranking. ’’I only hope I can stay there for the next couple of seasons.’’

Brattle achieved his own personal best of 7.66 at 167 miles per hour.

The pair raced six times at their local track, the Masterton Motorplex International Dragstrip, once at the Taupo Motorsport Park and once at the Nostalgia meeting at the Meremere Dragway in Waikato. Angry Azz placed second in the NZDRA Summer Nationals in Taupo and first in the Front Engine Dragster Challenge at the Nostalgia meet.

The team will be racing next at the Trentham Racecourse on May 21.
