Work to start on Cambridge pool
Waipa District Council is diving into the new $16.5 million Cambridge pool upgrade, with construction due to begin mid2018.
The existing pool is closed from Monday, February 26 and the finished pool is due to open late 2019.
Council staff has been working with architects and contractors on details of the building and the entrance way on Williamson St.
Project manager Lorraine Kendrick said the street design was vital to the project.
“We need easy access to the pool for all road users, including cyclists and kids on bikes,” she said.
“But we also want to retain a welcoming and attractive street for residents and visitors.
“We know how invested the community is in this facility and we’re excited to be getting to the point where everyone can see physical progress of the building starting to take shape.”
Latest images of the pool complex and plans for Williamson St show how traffic, pedestrians, cyclists and mobility scooters will be accommodated.
The street design includes underground power, angle car parking, wide shared paths, new tree planting, raised pedestrian ramps and a new bus stop. Work will begin on the detailed design phase this month.
“Detailed design means getting down to the real nuts and bolts of the project. It’s when we choose everything from the splash pad equipment to what towel hooks will be in the changing rooms and it’s when we place orders for all the equipment that needs to be sourced from overseas, like pool pumps and filters.”
