Wood scores late but Burnley bow out

-

You just can’t keep him out of the action, but Chris Wood’s late equaliser was not quite enough as Burnley was knocked out of the Carabao Cup (League Cup) by his former club, Leeds United.

In his first meeting against his old side, the All Whites striker came on as a substitute then once again got himself among the goals, scoring late from the penalty spot, but it was the visitors who prevailed in a stunning thirdround tie, taking it 5-3 on penalties after extra time.

Wood entered the fray at Turf Moor in the 71st minute, with the score 0-0.

While Championship side Leeds - who the Kiwi frontman moved from last month in a club record transfer reportedly worth more than £15 million (NZ$26.4m) - opened the scoring in the 80th minute, there was plenty of drama to follow.

With around five minutes of normal time remaining, Burnley won a penalty and up stepped Wood, who slammed the ball past goalkeeper Andy Lonergan to make it 1-1.

While it looked like he had done enough to force extra time then and there, there was further drama, as Leeds re-took the lead in the fourth of six minutes of added time through a penalty of their own.

But just as time looked up, a stunning free-kick from Robbie Brady for Burnley made for extraordinary scenes, as it was 2-2, and extra time did, indeed come.

While the teams couldn’t be separated in the extra half-hour, Wood did came close, with around five minutes to play, heading a Brady free-kick just over the bar.

So it was to be penalties which decided the outcome.

Wood stepped up and slotted the first one for Burnley, but after each team had successfully netted three times, James Tarkowski’s effort was saved, and Leeds - under the new ABBA penalties format - slotted two in succession to take the victory.

Meanwhile, Liverpool failed to finish off a slew of chances and conceded a sloppy goal in a 2-0 loss at Leicester, arousing the ire of their frustrated manager Juergen Klopp.

‘‘Second ball from a corner and a goal from a throw-in — I’m sick of goals like this, to be honest. Unbelievable,’’ Klopp said.

In another unconvincing domestic display at their temporary home of Wembley Stadium, Tottenham beat second-tier Barnsley 1-0 thanks to Dele Alli’s close-range goal in the 65th minute. Tottenham haven’t won any of their three Premier League games at Wembley this season, but have beaten Borussia Dortmund in the Champions League.

Crystal Palace scored their first goal since August 22 to earn a 1-0 win over Huddersfield and a first victory under new manager Roy Hodgson. Bakary Sako was the scorer from a corner.

Stoke lost 2-0 at Bristol City while Bournemouth, West Ham and Swansea were Premier League teams to advance to the next round.
