Aussie coaches unite for Bledisloe cause

-

Australian rugby coaches are finally banding together to plot a way to win back the Bledisloe Cup and World Cup off the All Blacks.

They have put state loyalties aside for the good of a common cause, meeting in Sydney today and tomorrow to look at ways to improve the Wallabies and Australian rugby in general.

They will have leadership training and profiling at Sydney’s University of Technology with input from the Australian Institute of Sport.

Former Wallabies star Rod Kafer has managed to organise the unprecedented forum as part of his role as head of special projects in the Australian union’s high performance department which is run by Ben Whittaker.

Australian rugby hit a new low this season when their Super Rugby teams failed to win a game against New Zealand opposition and the All Blacks put away the Bledisloe Cup for another year.

‘‘It is borne out of the fact that we had no Super Rugby wins against the Kiwis and 15 years of Bledisloe Cup losses,’’ Kafer told the Daily Telegraph.

‘‘People at some point have got to say ‘maybe we need to do something a little bit differently’, and I reckon we’re at that point.’’

Head coaches, assistant coaches, team analysts, athletic performance, team managers, general managers of high performance will all be part of the think tank.

‘‘We’re trying to answer the question of what does the player of the future look like, and are we preparing for the player of the future.

‘‘That will be a core concept of those two days,’’ Kafer said.

The Wallabies jumped to No 3 in the world rankings with their latest win over Argentina that saw them finish second to the All Blacks in the Rugby Championship.
