Radio DJ taking more time off

- STAFF REPORTER

Radio host Jay-Jay Harvey is taking further time off air following an alleged sexual assault she faced in a taxi.

The Edge breakfast host took an 18-day break after the incident but said she became bedridden on her return to work.

Harvey claimed an Auckland taxi driver groped her and attempted to follow her into her house about three weeks ago.

‘‘The stress of the taxi ordeal brought on a bout of vertigo,’’ she said. ‘‘[I] woke up to the room spinning and it wouldn’t stop . . . for five days!’’

Harvey said she had been in bed for all of the long weekend and she was off air yesterday.

From home, Harvey posted to Facebook thanking her supporters. She spoke earlier about how social media responded to the news and some of it wasn’t pretty.

‘‘I went on Facebook because I didn’t know what to do,’’ Harvey said.

‘‘From there I did cop a lot of flak.’’

On Monday night, she thanked people for encouraging her to talk to police.

‘‘I can’t tell you too much more about the incident or what the police are doing, but they are doing a great job,’’ she wrote.

Many people had contacted Harvey speaking about their own experiences being sexually harassed.

With these stories coming out at the same time as the movie mogul Harvey Weinstein allegations, she said the magnitude of the issue was sobering.

‘‘It’s appalling how many women are being indecently or sexually assaulted by men who are getting away with it. It has to stop,’’ Harvey said.

Many women, Harvey said, didn’t speak out.

‘‘Don’t let anyone get away with this crime. Always tell the police. They take these complaints very seriously,’’ she said.
