Secret wedding for Tutaia, Folau: report
Trans-Tasman sporting stars Maria Tutaia and Israel Folau have married in a secret ceremony, an Australian media report says.
The ceremony for the Silver Fern goal attack/shoot and Wallabies fullback took place before a select number of guests on a private property in Kangaroo Valley, around two hours south of Sydney, on Wednesday, Australian TV’s Channel 7 reported.
There has been no confirmation from Tutaia or Folau as yet.
Channel 7 called the timing of the wedding ironic given it was the same day that same sex marriage received a resounding vote of approval from the Australian public.
Folau was the ‘‘No’’ campaign’s most prominent sporting figure. A Mormon, he had tweeted his views against a law change last month.
Folau stood down from the Wallabies’ current northern hemisphere tour of Europe and rejected a short-term contract to play in Japan, saying he wanted to spend more time with Tutaia.
‘‘We’re both just having time off, we haven’t figured out a wedding date yet, but it’s pretty hard at the moment because of our seasons,’’ he told the Daily Telegraph last month. ‘‘We’re not in a rush to get things done, we’re just really trying to enjoy our time together because we don’t get a lot of that together.’’
Folau, 28, and Tutaia, 30, got engaged in October last year.
He also spoke of his love for Tutaia.
’’Early on in the relationship I knew she was the one,’’ he told the Daily Telegraph.
‘‘It was a feeling I’ve never had before in previous relationships. ‘‘She’s been really good for me, really supportive - from afar obviously - but she has been great.’’
Tutaia is the most experienced player in the Silver Ferns, having played 115 tests since her debut in 2005.
