CITIES FOR ARCHITECTURE LOVERS

-

1 Barcelona

From the magnificent Sagrada Familia to the enchanting Park Guell, Catalan architect Antoni Gaudi’s genius can be found in spades across this city. Even if architecture is not your thing, you’ll recognise his distinctively whimsical style as you wander the city streets. It’s not just about Gaudi though, you’ll also find masterpieces from other award-winning architects including Frank Gehry, Jean Nouvel and Richard Meier.

2 Brasilia

It was billed as the city of the future and Brazilian architect Oscar Niemeyer’s vision is evident in the incredible buildings that dot the landscape. Tour the presidential residence, the Palácio da Alvorada; wander by the reflecting pool outside Itamaraty Palace; and marvel at the bold structures of the Catedral Metropolitana. It’s akin to wandering a dream utopian world.

3 Mumbai

It’s most famous for its spicy street food and the jarring juxtaposition of Bollywood glitz and gritty slums, but there is so much more to this vibrant Indian city. Start at the entrance to Mumbai – the aptly named Gateway of India, a magnificent monument built in 1920. Have afternoon tea nearby at the Taj Palace Hotel, a grand hotel that brings together several styles of architecture. Finally check out the World Heritage Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus – a historic railway station. It’s stunning.
