Waikato builders winning work

Two Waikato builders have scooped awards at the industry’s most prestigious night – the Registered Master Builders

2017 House of the Year Awards. Aspiers Building Ltd won the Nulook New Home category for homes between

$700,000 and $1 million for a hilltop home in Gordonton.

And John Mourits Builder Ltd won the Master Build Services Renovation up to $500,000 for a Whangamata¯ bach.

The Gordonton home – a 311-squaremetre single-level dwelling – has windows on all sides and looks out over Waikato dairy country.

With three bedrooms, three bathrooms and two living rooms, it’s built from trees milled at the owners’ property.

Judges said a high standard of work was achieved throughout the home.

‘‘The extensive use of macrocarpa cladding to both exterior and interior walls in combination with other materials makes this a unique and interesting home.

‘‘Good design with a sensible approach to detailing by the builder has made this house feel special.’’

The 227sqm Whangamata¯ bach has four bedrooms, two bathrooms and two living rooms.

‘‘What was a typical single-level, twobedroom seaside bach has had a total makeover,’’ the judges said. ‘‘The result is a two-storey house consisting of four bedrooms with extensive interior and exterior living areas.

‘‘The new home has been excellently designed, constructed and renovated to a very high standard.’’

John Creighton Builder Ltd won the Supreme House of the Year award for a new build at Mt Pleasant in Christchurch. It also took home the national category win for the New Home over $2m Award and the Craftsmanship Award.

Wellington’s Planit Construction won Supreme Renovation of the Year for a major renovation at Mt Victoria. The company was also awarded the national category win for the Renovation over

$1m Award.

The 27th awards gala was held on Saturday night at SkyCity Auckland. About 550 guests from the building and construction industry attended.

Registered Master Builders chief executive David Kelly said builders are meeting the changing housing market with a wide range of materials and approaches.

‘‘They are the examples the industry can look to and which demonstrate the focus of Master Builders on achieving the highest quality across all house builds,’’ Kelly said.

Finalists for the award were selected from the Gold Reserve national finalists, which came out of 10 regional competitions held throughout the country in July and August.
