DHB’s $700k payout

- AARON LEAMAN

Waikato DHB dished out $700,000 in termination payments to 25 staff during the past financial year.

The payments are included in the health board’s 2016/17 annual report released yesterday. The report details the DHB’s healthcare performance against set targets as well as its financial standing. Among the listed highlights is the launch of the DHB’s joint bid with Waikato University to establish the country’s third medical school.

The Government has yet to make a call on the proposal. The DHB report details events and happenings up until June 30, 2017 so doesn’t include mention of the demise of disgraced health boss Nigel Murray or the resignation of DHB chairman Bob Simcock.

Murray quit his job on October

5 after investigators found he misspent health dollars on accommodation and travel. His salary is listed at between $560,000 to

$570,000 a year. The DHB’s

18-member executive team received $4.61m in salaries and benefits during the past financial year. About 960 staff left the DHB in 2016/17 out of a staff roster of

6763.

Twenty five employees received

$700,000 in termination payments an increase of $83,000 compared to the past financial year. Waikato DHB met its healthcare targets when it came to providing faster cancer treatment, and improving access to elective surgery.

It failed to meet the Health Ministry-imposed targets for helping smokers quit, raising healthy kids, increasing immunisation rates, and providing shorter stays in the emergency department.
