Plan passes first hurdle
A project that would get a library – and maybe pools – into Rototuna has got a provisional tick.
Hamilton City councillors voted 10-2 for the $18 million town centre plan.
It would include a town square, community hub – including a library – and car parks, council papers say.
Council will have to spend $7.75m in operating costs.
Another part of the plan is getting a private partner to build and operate a pool in the area.
‘‘Capital projects for a pool and library for the Rototuna community have been planned and included in one way or another in council’s 10-year plans since 2006,’’ council papers say.
‘‘Rototuna Town Centre will provide for the everyday needs of the existing and emerging local community. It is planned to include a central area where shopping and community facilities are located immediately adjacent to the sports park and surrounded by mixed density housing, schools and commercial activity.’’
There is a growing need for services and the proposal aimed to address that, it said.
Councillors’ decision will be part of the draft long-term plan, which will go out for public consultation.
Those who voted against the plan were Crs Garry Mallett and Leo Tooman.
