Shock one-day recall for White

Australia’s cricket selectors have pulled a shock move by naming veteran batsman Cameron White in their one-day international squad in another snub for Glenn Maxwell.

White was involved in a public spat with chairman of selectors Trevor Hohns last year but it seems all has been forgiven after he was called in as the replacement for injured batsman Chris Lynn, for the five ODIs against England starting in Melbourne on Sunday.

The 34-year-old is now in line to wear the green and gold for the first time in nearly three years.

White has been rewarded for his stellar form in the limited overs formats at state level for Victoria and the Melbourne Renegades.

The Victorian averaged nearly 50 in this summer’s JLT Cup and was the leading run-scorer in the domestic one-day cup last season. He has been dismissed just twice in the Big Bash League for an average of 142.5 but is well short of Hobart’s overnight star D’Arcy Short in the runs tally. Short can consider himself unlucky not to get a call-up after being arguably the best player of the Twenty20 Big Bash so far.

White’s promotion is another slap in the face for Maxwell, who was told by captain Steve Smith he needed to ‘‘train smarter’’. Despite being one of the heroes of Australia’s World Cup campaign in 2014, Maxwell is now on the outer in the test and ODI formats.

Selectors had been widely criticised for picking potential over performance but this summer has been one for the old timers.

Shaun Marsh and Tim Paine were shock selections for the Ashes but justified their recalls by playing important roles for Australia.

White’s recall is an even bigger surprise after he questioned the selection policy of Hohns’ panel, saying the Australian side ‘‘at some stages is a development team’’ with Sheffield Shield and domestic oneday form ignored.
