Sprinter due change of luck

- RACING

A bold run from Ja Ja Binks at Ellerslie on Sunday would put an end to David and Emma-Lee Browne’s frustrating run with the talented mare.

She has the opportunity to inject much-needed momentum to her summer campaign in the Monstavision – Fasttrack 5K (1200m), in which she will be ridden by Samantha Collett.

‘‘She was late scratched from the Newmarket after she slipped over in the birdcage,’’ David Browne said. ‘‘She came back perfectly from that but she was then balloted out of the Railway. The only place we would then find to run her was Thames and that got called off.

‘‘Hopefully, we’re right for this weekend and Sam has ridden her a couple of times to get a feel of the mare.

‘‘We’ll get through this race and then maybe line up on Karaka Million night. There’s a couple of options there, a fillies and mares’ race or the sprint.’’

Ja Ja Binks has won three of her eight starts, her latest appearance resulting in a fourth placing at Ellerslie.

The stable also has three runners at Trentham, headed by Belle du Nord in the Levin Classic (1600m).

‘‘It was an encouraging run last time, she’s been growing so much and she’s a big, strong filly now,’’ Browne said.

Two-year-old Hattie Bee will run in the Kilbirnie Sports Premier (1200m) and is still in Karaka Million (1200m) contention, while Stratocaster has returned to winning form this preparation following a two-year injury break.

❚ Christchurch trainer Terri Rae is no stranger to feature race success at Trentham and she is hoping to for further Group Three success at the Wellington track this weekend.

Rae produced Hold It Harvey to win the Thompson Handicap (1600m) at Trentham in 2011 and has two chances to repeat at that level on Saturday.

Rae will saddle five-year-old Alamosa mare Aspen Lass in the Mills Reef Trentham Stakes (2100m) and the Darci Brahma six-year-old gelding Kolonel Kev in the Tui - Backing Winners Since 1889 Anniversary (1600m), as well as Sacred Desire in the El Cheapo Cars Premier

(1200m).

‘‘We’ve made the trip to Trentham quite a few times and Hold It Harvey was able to win there, but he was an everywhere horse. It didn’t matter where he raced,’’ Rae said.

Aspen Lass and Kolonel Kev clashed last time out in the Listed Timaru Stakes

(1600m), with Kolonel Kev making it two wins in as many starts for his new stable, while Aspen Lass was never able to obtain clear running and finished seventh.

‘‘She just never got any clear run down the straight,’’ Rae said of Aspen Lass.

‘‘I would have preferred a better draw because she doesn’t just have to go back, but she just hasn’t had any luck with her barriers.

‘‘She settles really well though. She jumps out and tucks her head so she goes over ground well.

‘‘She has that stamina and a reasonable turn of foot.
