Boulders on road
Large boulders tumbled onto a highway in the Coromandel causing lane closures yesterday afternoon. But NZTA said there was no safety risk as they were brought down ‘‘during a safe, controlled operation’’. There was at least one large boulder sitting in the northbound lane of the highway that runs along the eastern coast between Waihi and Whangamata¯. The lane, 4km south of Whiritoa, was closed and traffic was earlier diverted along the other lane. The boulder had been removed by 3.30pm.
