Off-duty beauty

The products model Mary Maguet has on high rotation.

-

Born in South Sudan, model Mary Maguet moved from a Kenyan refugee camp to South Auckland with her family at the age of 2.

When she was 13 and already 5’11, she was scouted by a modelling agency while at church and went on to become one of the most sought-after models in New Zealand. Now 21, Maguet lives in Melbourne.

I’ve been obsessed with makeup since I was really young – like those days when glitter lip gloss was in fashion.

Lip gloss is still my favourite beauty product of all time. I love it because it makes you look instantly made-up, and you can also mix it with lip liner for extra colour. If there’s anything I will never get sick of doing, it’s putting on more lip gloss.

My biggest beauty faux pas was when I used to try to pull off pink lipstick – that was a terrible decision.

My beauty pet peeve is when people pile too much dark product onto their eyebrows, or turn them into unnatural shapes.

SKINCARE AND HAIR

During the week I like to keep my skincare routine simple, and I stick to the Sukin range because the products are really gentle on my skin.

First I’ll use the charcoal gel cleanser to wash my face, then I’ll apply the charcoal oil balancing facial tonic and balancing charcoal moisturiser.

I’m a firm believer that what you eat shows through your skin, so I always try to maintain a good diet and drink lots of water.

Once a week I’ll treat myself by setting aside a day for head-to-toe pampering at home, including my weekly face mask.

I have different types of masks I use depending on how my skin feels. I alternate between Sukin’s Charcoal Anti-pollution facial masque, Sanctuary Spa Radiance Warming Micro-dermabrasion polish or the Kiehl’s Rare Earth Pore cleansing masque. My favourite one is Sanctuary Spa, it really clears your skin out and brightens your complexion.

On pamper day I’ll deep condition my hair and moisturise it, and give myself a manicure and pedicure.

My best beauty tip for travelling is to always take a face mask on the plane to pop on, that way your skin will be nice when you land. Packing face wipes is another good hack, so you can wash your face without having to use cleanser and water.

MAKEUP

For my everyday makeup, I like to keep my look really natural and use as little product as possible to let my skin breathe.

I use NYX Double Dare blush to highlight my cheekbones and eyes and to warm up my face. Blushes are great for using as eyeshadows.

I’ll then apply Rimmel Scandal eyeliner and MAC False Lashes Extreme Black mascara on my eyelashes and eyebrows too. Sometimes I’ll do a winged liner, before glossing up my lips with NYX Butter gloss.

On the weekend I’ll wear a bit more makeup to give my outfit a little sass, and I’ll often put glitter on my eyes. I love playing with bright colours and matching my makeup to my outfit.

BODY

The one product I could not live without would be moisturiser. Vaseline Intensive Care Cocoa Glow body lotion has been my favourite for the last six years. It’s incredible for relieving dry skin, keeps you feeling soft all day and gives you a nice glow.

I’m not really into baths but I love bath bombs, especially Lush’s Green Coconut one. Whenever I have a bath I’ll throw in a bath bomb, and I’ll put a few drops of lavender oil in the water. My favourite scent at the moment is Victoria Secret’s Blush body mist, which my best friend recommended to me. I won’t be changing it anytime soon, it smells so yummy.

I’m don’t like anything too overly sweet-smelling. My old favourites are Elizabeth Arden Red Door Aura and Daisy by Marc Jacobs.
