Spice Girls may launch comeback at royal wedding

BRITAIN: It is the most soughtafter invitation of the year, with even US President Donald Trump looking like he will not make the cut. But now, it seems, all five Spice Girls are to be invited to the wedding of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle.

That, at any rate, was the claim of Mel B – Melanie Brown, or Scary Spice, as she was once known – on a chat show on US television. She even implied that the group, who first met Harry when he was 13, would be performing at the reception.

The suggestion that the Spice Girls could perform at the wedding first surfaced earlier this month, when Geri Horner, nee Halliwell, formerly known as Ginger Spice, said she would like the group to launch their comeback by performing at the wedding. British tabloid

said that Markle was a fan show whether she had been invited, she nodded and then added: ‘‘I don’t know if I should have said that.’’

Pressed on the question, she said, ‘‘Yes,’’ adding that ‘‘us five Spice Girls’’ all got an invitation, which she described as ‘‘proper’’.

When asked if the group would be performing, she did not give a full answer, but her coy response: ‘‘This is where I am just, like ...’’ was enough to convince the other participants on the show that they would be. When they whooped with joy, she said: ‘‘I need to go. I’m going to be fired!’’

Kensington Palace has declined to comment on reports of who has been invited to the wedding. However, a royal source said that the invitations for the wedding, which will be at St George’s Chapel, Windsor Castle, on May 19, had not been sent out yet.

Doubt has been cast on the possibility of a Spice Girls reunion because Mel C, aka Sporty Spice, is said to be reluctant. Horner admitted that members of the band had ‘‘different priorities’’, and said of a possible reunion: ‘‘We are still working it out. We are looking at how we are going to do it ... so watch this space!’’

Harry met the Spice Girls when they performed at a charity concert for the Prince’s Trust in South Africa in 1997. He received a hug from all of them, and Emma Bunton, aka Baby Spice, gave him a kiss on the cheek. He met them again the following year, when Prince Charles invited them for tea at Highgrove as thanks for the help they had given to the Prince’s Trust.

There is a growing list of musicians who have been mooted to perform at Harry and Meghan’s wedding, including Sir Elton John and Sam Smith.
