‘No future at all’ for Nix

-

Outspoken Australian football pundit Robbie Slater says the end is nigh for the Wellington Phoenix.

The Phoenix slumped to their

13th loss in 22 games this season on Saturday when going down

4-1 to the Western Sydney Wanderers.

They have sacked their coach Darije Kalezic and look destined for the wooden spoon, although they sit only three points behind ninth-placed Central Coast Mariners.

And it was both of the bottom two clubs who came into the sights of former Socceroo Slateryesterday morning when he was interviewed by Sky Sports Radio.

‘‘In my opinion, the FFA [Football Federation Australia] need to walk into both these clubs that played and lost on the weekend. Wellington would be the first. Wellington, I see no future at all in the Hyundai A-League. I just do not know what they’re bringing to the competition at the moment.

‘‘There was the Save The Nix campaign, which actually saved them, I think they were given maybe an extra five or three years. Their crowds are back down to terrible levels.’’

The Save The Nix Campaign started in November 2015 after the FFA refused to grant the club a long-term licence extension.

The FFA eventually yielded, granting the Phoenix a 10-year conditional licence in February 2016, with the first four years through to the end of the 2019-20 season guaranteed. The club has to meet certain metrics, including attendances, memberships and television ratings, for two more three-year extensions to be granted.
