‘Busted arm’ forces NZ weightlift­er to retire

‘‘It looks like it’s probably going to be a career-ending injury, which is a real shame, but I’m glad I’ve gone out trying to achieve my best on the platform.’’

Her coach, Simon Kent, told RNZ that Hubbard would need surgery, but was unaware if she had made a definitive retirement call.

‘‘It’s going to need surgery and elbows are a pretty integral part of our sport, so at 40 years of age it’s going to be tough,’’ he said. ‘‘That’ll be Laurel’s decision whether in six or 12 months’ time – does she pull the pin, or does she come back again?’’

The injury brought to an abrupt end her debut at the Commonweal­th Games which drew widespread attention and controvers­y.
