Momentum theatre

-

I think we are fortunate to have an editor at the Waikato Times who allows ‘‘balance’’ in considering local issues reflected in the April 24 issue. On the one hand we have the plea from Momentum developers to vote for the possible theatre in the 10-year plan (have they been given the whisper that voting isn’t going their way), and on the other, a letter from a world-renowned local proven theatre director of an international theatre group, Richard O’Brien, saying very clearly, Momentum has failed in its process. Given the astronomical proposed rate increases by HCC, do we trust the figures we are being told given this is an asset the city will not control? Been out to dinner in Hamilton lately? I presume all this parking that is referred to in the Momentum proposal is there now? How come on week nights it is nowhere to be found? After all it is only a five to 10-minute walk. Founders has parking for free on its doorstep with no safety issues. If we can’t afford to run our city, where is the $25 million coming from and ongoing rated support for the Momentum private project? From the proposed 20% rates increase? But wait there is more! The regional council is supporting the proposal. How? With our regional rates! Momentum, Mayor King and councillors, you have ‘‘presumed too much!’’ You thought the ratepayers would roll over and love you for your rate increases and pretty pictures of a new theatre. Funny old thing, we like the Founders site, it can be developed to international standard and all you had to do was invite Richard O’Brien and others to lead us in its renewal. If our council is ‘‘confused’’ about our city finances, do you really think we are going to trust you in your farcical ‘‘Oliver’’ production. ‘‘Please Sir, I want some more (rates).’’ Complete the feedback form and do let your voice be heard, Hamilton.
