Super stars set to light it up at Eden Park

-

Sonny Bill Williams and TJ Perenara could add a sprinkling of star dust to Friday’s Blues and Hurricanes clash at Eden Park.

The Hurricanes are working under the assumption that Blues second five-eighth Williams will make his comeback from a fractured thumb, while Perenara is almost over his knee injury. The halfback hasn’t played since the Hurricanes’ 38-37 win over the Sharks on April 6, but has returned to pretty full training.

Fullback Jordie Barrett (ankle) is the other Hurricanes All Black on his way back from injury, but sounds slightly less likely to front than Perenara.

As for Williams, his inclusion would be a huge boost to a Blues team fresh off Saturday’s 24-21 win over the Waratahs.

‘‘With [loose forward] Jerome Kaino coming back in the weekend, I think he added a bit of steel to their forward pack and led from the front in that game. And I think people are saying Sonny’s back this week, so he’s going to add another dimension to their backline,’’ Hurricanes No 8 Gareth Evans said.

The Hurricanes could definitely do with the dimension Perenara would add to their own backline. Jamie Booth and Finlay Christie have done adequate jobs in his absence, but Perenara isn’t an All Black for nothing.

‘‘He’s got a few boxes to tick in the earlier part of the week, but he’s definitely a chance [to play],’’ Hurricanes backs coach Jason Holland said.

Perenara has watched the last two Hurricanes games from the sideline wherehe’s been a bit of a caged lion.

The Hurricanes have a policy of players having to train fully on Monday, to be considered for Friday. Holland maintained the team was ‘‘not sure yet’’ about Jordie Barrett, which sounds a bit unlikely.

Barrett rolled an ankle on Saturday afternoon and, you presume, still has a bit of swelling. He came out for the team’s prematch warm-up against the Lions but quickly decided he wasn’t right to play, with Nehe MilnerSkudder starting at fullback instead.

‘‘He only did it a few days ago so we just have to see how he comes along with that ankle, but we’re not going to risk him if he’s not right,’’ Holland said.

Which would suggest he won’t play this week?

‘‘We’re not sure yet. Jordie wants to play and we want to give him the opportunity to play, so we’ll give him another couple of days and see how that pans out. We’ll probably know by tomorrow night whether he’s ready to go,’’ Holland said.

Milner-Skudder is a more than able replacement and a bit of caution around Barrett’s return would mean players such as Vince Aso, Ben Lam and Julian Savea wouldn’t need to be dropped from the 23 either.

Aso drew the short straw last week, only to be summoned onto the bench when Barrett wasn’t fit to play.
