Business meeting ends in sex assault

-

It was meant to be a business meeting. It turned into a violent sexual assault on a woman in her own home.

And the man who committed that assault, Waingaro-based company director Christopher Shaun Hanes, 33, was jailed for two years and two months when he appeared in the Hamilton District Court on Thursday, on a charge of assault with intent to commit sexual violation.

Hanes’ victim was in court to stare him down and reveal the devastating impact his attack had on her.

It was about 3pm on August 29 when Hanes and a business associate arrived in separate cars at the woman’s house in Hamilton to discuss a business matter, the court heard.

After a few minutes of talking in her lounge, Hanes sent his associate a text message, telling him to ‘‘go to the car for 10 mins for a phone call’’.

The associate replied: ‘‘You buzz me and hang up when I walk outside and I’ll hang out there’’. Hanes texted back: ‘‘Sweet, gana take me 15 mins or so to loose it up’’.

Hanes and his victim went out to the deck and discussed another business associate who the woman was having some issues with. Hanes hugged her, and told her everything was going to be OK.

‘‘Yes,’’ she said. At that point, Hanes’ demeanour suddenly changed.

‘‘F***ing say it,’’ he said aggressively. She didn’t respond.

‘‘Don’t think I won’t drag you inside.’’ He grabbed her hair, dragged her into the lounge and threw her to the ground.

He pinned her hands to the ground with his knees before sexually assaulting her, laughing as he did so, the court heard.

The assault continued for some time. At one point Hanes again grabbed her by her hair and dragged her down the hallway to the bedroom.

In an effort to defend herself, she bit him on his thigh and she backed away, clutching his leg.

The victim went out to the lounge where she found the man’s business associate sitting on the couch.

He asked her what had happened. ‘‘Your f***ing friend pulled it out, she said.
