University climbs world rankings

-

Waikato University academics and their research are among the best in the world, according to the latest QS World University Rankings.

The list ranked Waikato 92nd worldwide for citations per faculty, a measure of how often their research is cited by other academics around the world.

In the rankings released yesterday Waikato University has also improved 18 places on last year’s overall spot, moving from 292 to 274 out of more than 26,000 universities.

Vice-chancellor Professor Neil Quigley said a lot of work has been done to improve the way the university performs so it was good to see that validated in the results.

‘‘The hard work and outstanding research of our academics is again being acknowledged as amongst the most influential in the world. Not only are they helping address key global issues, but as great educators they are passing their skills and knowledge on to future leaders. ’’

The ranking also increased for international students, reflecting the strength of the university’s international

‘‘Increasingly, students are doing their homework on things like rankings when they’re choosing a university,’’ Quigley said.

‘‘We first started seeing that with international students about a decade ago but now we find the students in New Zealand are quite interested in these ranking metrics because they’re making a significant investment in their tertiary education and they want to make sure they get that right.

‘‘One of the things that this ranking says is the students from the Waikato and the Bay of Plenty don’t need to go anywhere else to get a reputable education. The University of Waikato is offering that for them.

‘‘From a quality perspective, they have a great option here.’’

Quigley said the results aren’t just a win for the university, it’s a win for the region.

‘‘There’s a number of New Zealand universities that rank in the 200s in the world.

‘‘It’s not just good for the university, it’s good for Hamilton and the Waikato.

‘‘It’s a university for the region so one of the biggest global brands based here in the region. The fact we are doing so well in terms of global brand recognition is a good thing.’’
