South Korea after shock win

Shots bro. Tequilas for South Korea.

Mexican football fans partied at the Korean embassy in Mexico City yesterday, personally thanking the Korean ambassador for his nation’s shock 2-0 Fifa World Cup victory over Germany.

Grateful Mexicans gathered at the embassy after South Korea’s win secured Mexico’s place in the round of 16 in Russia.

The Korean ambassador joined in the fun, downing a shot of tequila while surrounded by adoring fans chanting ‘‘shot, shot, shot, shot’’.

After the ambassador sees it off, he raised his arms and the group of Mexican fans went wild in celebration.

Across the city, another Korean man wearing a Mexican shirt was lifted on to a man’s shoulders and carried across a fan park.

The good will was extended around the world, including in Madrid, as Mexico earned a last 16 date with Brazil.

Back in Russia, further videos and pictures emerged of Mexicans and Swedish supporters celebrating with South Korean fans.

One video showed a Korean man clutching a Swedish flag while being hurled into the air by a group of Mexicans shouting ‘‘Korea, Korea, Korea’’.

Kim Young-Gwon and Son Heung- Min scored South Korea’s goals in stoppage time as they recorded one of the biggest upsets in tournament history.

Because Mexico lost 3-0 to Sweden in Group F’s final games, South Korea beating Germany spared the Mexicans from a painful elimination after they had won their opening two games.

The sequence of results meant South Korea did not advance, and Sweden and Mexico qualified from the group, but they left their mark on the tournament by knocking out the defending champions.

Sweden topped the group and face Switzerland in the round of 16 on Wednesday, while Mexico finished second and and have to play Brazil on Tuesday.
