Doctor ‘a fine colleague’
The doctor who died when he was run over by his own vehicle has been described as a ‘‘tremendous colleague’’ who helped shape the careers of many young medics.
Dr Anthony Yung, 50, was removing belongings from the boot of his car, at the Tawa St Clinic on Friday, when his car began to roll backwards.
He tried to stop the car from rolling but tripped and fell beneath it. He died at the scene. His death has been referred to the Coroner.
Yung, a dermatologist, was described as a ‘‘beloved colleague’’ at the clinic, which specialises in areas includ- ing gastroenterology, urology, and dermatology.
Throughout his career, he helped many trainees, said Dr Amanda Oakley, who worked with him for years at Waikato Hospital.
‘‘He was much loved by his many, many registrars over the years, who have learned so much from him,’’ she said.
Oakley is adjunct associate professor at Waikato District Health Board’s department of dermatology, and Yung was her registrar in the 90s.
After two years at Waikato, he carried on specialist training in Auckland, then the UK, and returned to Waikato as a consultant in 2006.
‘‘He was just a tremendous colleague and is going to be hugely missed,’’ said Oakley, who also spoke on behalf of the NZ Dermatological Society.
Yung’s colleagues at Waikato Hospital were deeply saddened, a statement from chief medical officer Gary Hopgood said.
Yung was ‘‘a highly regarded colleague and friend to many in the hospital who’d been with us in the order of 20 years’’.
Fellow specialists at the Tawa St Clinic were in shock and did not want to comment.
