Fulham net first win, add to Burnley’s woes
All Whites star Chris Wood’s Burnley tasted defeat for the second time in four days, losing 4-2 to Fulham in the English Premier League yesterday.
Burnley were desperate to bounce back after Friday’s 3-1 Europa League first leg qualifying loss to Greek side Olympiakos, but were outplayed at London’s Craven Cottage.
The Clarets now have only one point from three games, while Fulham claimed their first points of the season to move up to 12th.
Wood, who netted from the penalty spot against Olympiakos, failed to get on the scoresheet and was substituted after 66 minutes.
Serbian striker Aleksandar Mitrovic, whose 12 goals on loan last term helped Fulham to promotion back to the Premier League, set about the task of keeping them there with two headers in two minutes.
Chelsea kept pace with Premier League leaders Liverpool as DeAndre Yedlin’s late own goal gave them a 2-1 win at Newcastle.
The Magpies thought they had banked a point when substitute Joselu headed home an 83rdminute equaliser to cancel out Eden Hazard’s penalty seven minutes earlier.
But their joy was shortlived when Yedlin could only help Marcos Alonso’s drive into his own net with three minutes remaining.
Watford also maintained their 100 per cent record with a 2-1 home victory over Crystal Palace.
Roberto Pereyra and Jose Holebas were on target for the Hornets, with Wilfried Zaha managing a late consolation for the Eagles.
Palace were furious that Watford midfielder Etienne Capoue avoided an early red card after appearing to rake his studs down the back of Zaha’s Achilles.
