Conservatorium of Music in Jerusalem as well as leading roles with New Zealand orchestra groups.
He is widely experienced, a player of such quality that no one would ever tell him not to quit his day job.
This is his day, and night, job. In this recital he was playing baroque music – which carries with it its own unique brand of difficulty, and style.
He strolled on to the stage, grinned happily at the audience, nodded at the Associate Artists, and began to play Vivaldi’s Concerto for Bassoon and RV 496 Strings.
By the largo, the audience was aware of how special this event could be.
Against the liquid sound of the bassoon the sharper percussive rhetoric of the harpsichord was fresh and clean, and over it Bradfield layered lachrymosic rhythms and harmonies which set the tone for the evening.
The professional, sensitive, technically mindbending artistry spread among the Associate Artists to produce a programme of music which was unique in timbre and interpretation, with flawless ornamentation providing excelsior interruptus moments against otherwise authoritative and controlled tempi.
Remarkably, their lively stage presence was more typical of riffing jazz musicians than staid classicists, and the enjoyment generated by atmosphere and quality was as satisfying for the audience as it was clearly enjoyable for the performers.
