Taylor’s resilience impresses Rudan

- Liam Hyslop

For five minutes after Steven Taylor’s horror miss, Mark Rudan was unsure if his on-field general would mentally recover.

Rudan watched in dismay in the ninth minute of their 0-0 draw with the Brisbane Roar on Sunday as Taylor’s miskick struck the outside of the post instead of the back of an empty Roar net.

He then paid close attention to Taylor to gauge his reaction.

‘‘I was looking at him for a good five minutes because he was all over the shop, he knew what a good chance that was,’’ Rudan said.

But Rudan was impressed by the way the centre back soon regained his composure and led the team through the rest of the stout defensive showing at Suncorp Stadium.

‘‘We all make mistakes, and I’ve made that really clear to the players, we’ll all make mistakes in the game, including myself, but it’s what you do thereafter, and I think that’s where he showed his real leadership qualities, and the type of character that he is.

‘‘He worked extremely hard, continued to communicate, was right behind his team-mates, put his body on the line. That’s important.’’’’

Outside of all of the mental factors, Rudan said he was happy with how his team executed their gameplan against Brisbane.

The one-win, one-draw start equalled their best start to a season since the 2012-13 campaign.

They will look to continue that run when they host the Western Sydney Wanderers at Westpac Stadium on Saturday night.
